Dream Theater was formed in September 1985, when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung decided to form a band to fill their spare time while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. They then met a drummer, Mike Portnoy, in one of the rehearsal rooms at Berklee, and after two days of negotiations, they managed to get Mike Portnoy to join. After that, the three of them wanted to fill two empty spots in the band, and Petrucci asked the band's friend, Kevin Moore, to become a keyboard player. He agreed, and when Chris Collins was invited to be a vocalist, the band was complete.
With five members, they decided to name the band Majesty. According to the DVD Score documentation, the five of them were queuing up tickets for the Rush concert at the Berklee Performance Center when listening to Rush with a boom box. Portnoy then said that the ending of the song (Bastille Day) sounds very "majestic". It was then that they decided Majesty was a good name for a band, and it remained nice until now.
At those moments, Portnoy, Petrucci and Myung are still struggling with their lectures, also with part-time work and teaching. Their schedules become tight tips so they have to decide between pursuing a career in music or ending the band Majesty. But eventually Majesty won and the three of them came out of Berklee to concentrate on a musical career. Petrucci commented on this in the DVD Score documentation, saying that it was hard to ask his parents to go to music school. And it's even harder to convince his parents to get him out of school.
Moore also finally got out of school, SUNY Fredonia, to concentrate on the band.
Their first album, When Dream And Day Unite was recorded with Charlie Dominici as vocalist and Kevin Moore as a keyboards player. Dominici was much older than the other members and wanted to play other music, so he left the group. They then looked for an ideal replacement for 2 years until finally met with James LaBrie, a vocalist from Canada through an audition.
Together with LaBrie they recorded Images And Words that catapulted their name to the international ranks with hit "Pull Me Under" and "Another Day". Awake is their last album with Moore which was later replaced by Derek Sherinian for Falling Into Infinity album. In the end Sherinian was also replaced by Jordan Rudess and this formation still survives to this day. They have released the concept album Metropolis 2: Scenes From A Memory and the double album of Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. In 2003 they decided to record a non-concept Train Of Thought album that was heavily influenced by thrash metal groups such as Metallica.
