The full name Stephen Percy "Steve" Harris was born on March 12, 1956 and grew up in Leystone, Essex, England. He is a musician, songwriter, bassist and founder of British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. He is the only original member left from the beginning, with guitarist Dave Murray performing on all the band's albums.
At first he had the dream of becoming a professional footballer. Guided by Wally St Pier, Steve was asked to practice with West Ham United. After hearing and interested in rock music in his early teens, he realized that he no longer wanted to play soccer professionally.
Initially he wanted to play dram, but his house was not fit to accommodate the dram device and decided to buy bass. He learned to play bass self-taught, his first bass was a Fender Precision model costing 40 pounds in 1971.
Just 10 months after he bought his first bass, Steve joined a band, originally called Influence and then Gypsy's Kiss, composed of Bob Verscoyle (Vocals), Dave Smith (guitar) and Paul Sears (drums). After several appearances at the Cart and Horses pubs in Maryland Point, Stratford and the Bridgehouse in Canning Town, the band broke up and Steve auditioned for a band called Smiler in February 1974. From this result, Steve began writing his own songs and worked with Iron Maiden members in the future of Dennis Wilcock and Doug Sampson, but left the band after refusing to play the songs, assuming it was too complicated.
After leaving Smiler, Steve started forming Iron Maiden on Christmas Day 1975, with the band's name inspired by the movie The Man In The Iron Mask. Before Iron Maiden signed a contract with EMI in 1979, Steve worked as an artworkman for an architect at East End Of London until he was dismissed, and at that time he worked as a street sweeper.
Since the founding of Iron Maiden, Steve has been the band's main songwriter and lyricist. The songwriting is similar to his fast bass drumming style and a song inspired by progressive rock with several tap changes. Currently, Steve's songs are becoming more progressive, and guitarist Adrian Smith comments that Steve is more likely to be a lyricist, melody and music maker and other members to write their own songs. Steve often writes lyrics about mythology, history and topics inspired by books and movies, reflecting his influence and his interest in progressive rock.
On September 24, 2012, Steve released his first solo album, British Lion. The album contains songs such as: This Is My God, Lost Worlds, Karma Killer and 7 other songs. Joining a band, called the British Lion, which he co-managed and wrote songs together in the early 1990s, Steve still communicated with his vocalist, Richard Taylor, and guitarist Graham Leslie, and the album contained hard rock songs that were affected 1970s era, written and recorded over the years along with Iron Maiden tour dates. Talk to Kerrang! in September 2012, Steve declared that the recording was more of a side project than a solo album, apparently he was more "comfortable with the band environment".
In an interview with Classic Rock in August, Steve stated that he will be releasing more solo albums and hoping to tour with the band in the future. Steve has done it on a separate European tour in 2013 and 2014.
Lauren Harris, Steve's eldest daughter, was a singer and supported Iron Maiden with his solo bands in 2006 and 2008. In 2008, Lauren released an album, titled Calm Before The Storm, and now he's a member of the band called Kingdom Of I, after forming Six Hour Sundown. Meanwhile, Steve's eldest son, George became guitarist in the band The Raven Age, and his second daughter, Kerry, worked as a production assistant for Iron Maiden.
Steve had been divorced from a wife he had married for 16 years, Lorraine, in 1993, and called it "probably the hardest time I've ever experienced". The dark period in his life was written and inspired following Iron Maiden album, the album released in 1995, The X Factor. Steve has four children from Lorraine; Lauren, Kerry, Faye and George, and two people with Emma's current partner; Stanley and Maisie.
Since 1980, Steve has a second-floor building in Sheering Essex, on a plot of land where he built a recording studio and private editing studio, "Barnyard". In November 2012, the 9-acre property was sold, to a spokesman for her housing agency, Hamptons International, stating that "she now lives between Los Angeles and the Bahamas.
As a footballer in his childhood, Steve played for an amateur club and was later guided by Wally St Pier and asked to train with West Ham United, where he has been a fan since he was 9 years old. Though he wished to play professionally, Steve realized that "it was not what he wanted to do". However, Steve still plays soccer with his own team, "Maidonians", and still supports West Ham, still communicating with the club, and has a shield emblem on all of his Precision bass.
Steve Harris is often regarded as the best and most influential heavy metal bass player. He is best known for his "gallop" galloping style, usually the eighth note followed by two sixteenth tones at a fast tempo (eg Trooper and Run To The Hills) or an eighth triplet, which he plays with two fingers , compared to using pickers. Before playing, Steve often gave chalk to his fingers, to make the quick note patterns easy to play, as seen on the DVD bonus for A Matter Of Life And Death album. Iron Maiden Guitarist Janick Gers commented that "Steve taught himself so that other people can not follow him. They say it's like a lead guitar, but it's not. This gives the band a foundation and really moves it, but that's the tone he has. to listen to other things and a tone that does not combine normally with a bass, it's similar to a rhythm guitar ".
Steve Harris was influenced by progressive rock bands of the 1970s, as well as early hard rock bands. The bands that influenced him were Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Wishbone Ash and Yes. Speaking of Iron Maiden's early music, Steve Harris defined bands that use twin guitars inspired by Wishbone Ash and Thin Lizzy, the complex musical changes and atmosphere of Genesis and Jethro Tull, and the dark melodic elements of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin.
Steve plays Fender Precision a specially painted bass, which is on every Iron Maiden album, which has undergone color change 4 times since he used it. Originally white, which then turned black according to the first album, followed by blue and finally white with West Ham United shield painting. Steve has a modified bass with glass, Badass Bridge and Seymour Duncan SPB1 pickups and uses his own signature with the Rotosound string. In 2009, Fender released Steve's signature precision bass, featuring a bright blue color, a glass, Seymour Duncan SPB1 pickup and Badass II bridge.
In 2005, Metal Hammer sampled that he used eight Marshalls cabinet with Trace Elliot amps of 8 pieces. He also uses 4 Sony WRT wireless transmitters, which allows him to move freely on stage. Steve Harris's bass equipment images are documented on GuitarGeek.com.
Although he played keyboardist on the Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son album, along with guitarist Adrian Smith in 1988, Steve started playing regular keyboard keyboards for Iron Maiden, Virtual XI and later. Until the album Virual XI, Michael Kenney, bass technician Steve, has been playing keyboardist since the album No Prayer For The Dying (1990), and live and act as supervisor in the studio. Together with Adrian Smith and guitarist Dave Murray, Steve experimented with synthesizers on the Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son albums, using a bass synthesizer on Somewhere In Time, and played the String synth Keyboard on Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.
Steve was also known as the performer of mixing on band albums and became a producer for albums in the 1990s, where the recording was done in the studio he had at the time, located in a field of his, called "Barnyard Studios". Since the 2000 album, Brave New World, with Bruce Dickinson's insistence, they did not record at Barnyard, where Bruce expressed his limitations on the breadth, and hired Kevin Shirley, along with Steve as a producer.
Steve also directed and edited the band's videos, starting with Maiden England in 1989. Although not alone, Steve megedit DVD Rock In Rio where he was not satisfied with the production by the team hired by the band. In working on a project, Steve had to learn on his own how to use digital software with existing equipment at Barnyard Studio, and start editing DVD Death On The Road. Of all these things he has contributed in producing 13 music videos of the band, where, Infinite Dreams, Holy Smoke, Tailgunner and Bring Your Daughter ... To The Slaughter directed and edited by Steve Harris himself.
