Aretha Franklin's 'Soul Queen' was hospitalized and 'seriously ill,' the report said

"This is exclusive, and heartbreaking for me and for the great family and friends of Aretha Franklin. He is seriously ill in Detroit, "Friedman wrote. "The family asks for prayer and privacy."
Franklin's family, as well as others close to him, were reported to be in the hospital with the singer.
It is not clear at this time what actually caused the 76-year-old Memphis native hospital. However, the star has had a number of health problems, including reportedly being diagnosed with cancer in 2010.

"Franklin has struggled with many health problems for years and had to cancel a series of concerts last summer by calling 'doctor's orders,'" according to a report by BET. "His last appearance was on November 2 last year for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in New York."
Franklin also suffered from severe flight fears, which was the reason why he toured frequently in the past few decades. And Franklin's performances have become a real rarity in this part for the past half century or so. Indeed, he will play the 1976 show at the old Circle Star Theater in San Carlos and then wait 40 years to return to the Bay Area for the 2016 show at Oracle Arena in Oakland.
We talked with Franklin before the last mentioned date and he took the opportunity to remember his previous visit to Oakland when he "appeared with my father (C.L. Franklin's news and civil rights activist) in one of the city's arenas. I was around 17 years old and preceded him, singing the Gospel before his sermon. That is my oldest and most beautiful memory of Oakland. "
