Cynthia Hetfield died of cancer, without medical treatment, in 1979 when James was 16 years old. After his mother's death, James lives with David, his stepbrother. Virgil, the father, died in 1996, while Metallica toured Load's album.
Influence of music

He also joined in several bands as a teenager Obsession (the possibility of this band left by James for rejecting his creation, as revealed in an interview with Howard Stern 2013 ), Syrinx, Phantom Lord, then Leather Charm before forming Metallica (source of Ron McGovney Interview 1997 ) .
James called Aerosmith a band that influenced him in his childhood, and said that it was their inspiration to play the guitar. Other bands that he also admitted to have an important influence on him are: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC / DC, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, Ted Nugent and Deep Purple. For non-metal bands, James calls The Beatles a big influence on him. However, the first recording he purchased was the single "Sweet Home Alabama" from Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Metallica (1981-present)
James formed Metallica with drummer Lars Ulrich. Metallica logo from the beginning until now is the result of his work, including the design of a scary guy with a sketch of a skulled skull. James also contributed to most of the album cover art of Metallica.
At first, Metallica experimented with several vocalists and guitarists. The point to look similar to Diamond Head. But at the beginning of its formation, when making the first demo of 'Hit The Lights' to fill Massacre 1 Metal compilation album, James filled out vocals, guitar rhythm, and bass as well. Lars as the drummer and Lloyd Grant filled the guitar solos, before the presence of Ron McGovney as the first bassist and Dave Mustaine who replaced Lloyd Grant.
Until the 1990s, James was the one who created the entire rhythm track and most harmony. Since Load's album, Hammett has been involved in creating rhythm. Instead, James also filled the guitar solos on several songs, including: 'Nothing Else Matters', 'My Friend of Misery', outro solo on 'The Outlaw Torn', second solo in 'To Live is To Die', first interlude solo in 'Master of Puppets', first solo in 'Suicide and Redemption', solo harmonization in 'Orion' and solo harmonic intro in 'The Day That Never Comes'. He also wrote the majority of guitar harmony, mostly song lyrics, vocals, and also arranged songs with Lars Ulrich. To this day James recorded his solo guitar for several songs in the studio recording, among others in Master of Puppets, To Live Is To Die, Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven, My Friend of Misery, The Jack Built House, Thorn Within, The Outlaw Torn, Carpe Diem Baby, Turn the Page, Whiskey in the Jar, Overkill, Damage Case, Dead Forever Stone, Too Late Too Late, Ecstasy of Gold, Suicide & Redemption, Just A Bullet Away. Hetfield often experience accidents due to extreme sports hobbies or while acting on stage. Two times a natural skateboard accident that made his arm bone cracked and canceled the show, jetski accident, until the most famous on August 8, 1992 during a gig, some body, face, and his left arm burned by the pyrotechnique so the show must be stopped, and for 4 weeks James so full vocalist, while the rhythm guitar position was replaced by guitartech (assistant) Kirk Hammett, John Marshall ( later a member of the Metal Church band).
Hetfield made his first vocal course after a Metallica album tour suffered a vocal breakdown after bringing the cover song Anti-Nowhere League, 'So What!'
In the process of making the album St. Anger in 2001, James rehab into alcohol addiction for 7 months. Since then he stopped drinking alcohol and healthy lifestyle.
On April 4, 2009, James and the rest of the band received the award of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In an interview after they were nominated, James said that everyone who has been involved in the band Metallica must be recognized as the Hall of Fame (legend). In the evening of the award, Jason Newsted and Ray Burton (Cliff's father) were present. Ron McGovney was absent, and Dave Mustaine refused to come because of a collision with Megadeth's tour schedule.
Personal life
In addition to writing songs, singing and playing music, James likes outdoor activities such as hunting, skateboarding, snowboarding, jet skiing, car and motor modifications, or watching his beloved American football team game Oakland Raiders. He is also listed as a member of the National Rifle Association (national shoot association).
He once sold a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro on eBay. The car was used in making the 'I Disappear' videoclip, which was presented to James after the filming was over. James used the car for 3 years and has modified some of its parts. This online auction had climbed up to 120,000 USD, but then ebay cancel some bidders so the last price is 70.000 USD. Buyers will be given an additional 3 pieces of images size 8 x 10 inches footage shoot videoklip 'I Disappear' signed by James Hetfield. The proceeds of the sale were donated to the Music for School program.
James was classified as 'late' to have a tattoo, his first tattoo made when he was 37 years old. The tattoo on his left arm is a picture of fire covering 4 playing cards representing his birth year as (1), 9, 6, and 3 and the words "Carpe Diem". The fire according to James symbolizes a pyrotechnic incident at a concert in Montreal Canada August 8, 1992. In his hand, near the right thumb, there is a tattoo of the letter M (Metallica), and F in left hand for Francesca, the name of his wife who married August 17, 1997. In addition there the initials of the children's names on the chest (Cali, Castor and Marcella). In an interview with NPR's Fresh Air, James revealed that his wife helped a lot in her maturation process and her emotional management became more constructive.
While replacing Lars in a radio interview with Howard Stern on July 30, 2004, James revealed that a meeting with Francesca occurred during the tour. An Argentine woman and the real name of Francesca Tomasi is one of the band's crew who takes care of food and costumes. "We're like friends, she's an independent woman and does not care about my truth, the woman I'm looking for."
James had been a resource person in a documentary project entitled Absent , directed by Justin Hunt. The film highlights the effects of father's absence on children, and the 'wounds (from) the father' who were left out because of the absence. In this film James shows some songs which he says are an expression of disappointment over his parents' absence: 'Dyers Eve', 'The God That Failed', 'Mama Said', and 'All Within My Hand'.
