Withdrew in 2001 and continued his side project while in Metallica, Echobrain. Played for Ozzy Osbourne and joined Canadian heavy metal band Voivod. He also founded Chophouse Records (labels and studios) headquartered in California. Now he's playing for the band he founded: Newsted, as bassist-vocalist.

Careers
Prior to joining Metallica, Jason was a Flotsam and Jetsam bass player and had produced the Doomsday for the Deceiver album in 1986. Jason was the author of most of the album's lyrics.

Jason is a fan of Metallica, and is excited to audition with 39 other musicians. In So What magazine Volume 1.2, it was revealed that Jason underwent two audition days after 2 weeks of memorizing as many Metallica songs as possible. Jason auditioned in shock because apart from band members and crew, there were also Cliff Burton's parents and Torben Ulrich (Lars's father) watching the audition process. One day after being selected as the new bassist, Cliff Burton's parents met him, hugged him and said "I know you're the right person. Be yourself."

His first recording was The $ 5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited, 1987. Followed by the album ... And Justice For All (1988) which reap a lot of criticism and controversy because of the almost inaudible bass and bass line that followed or stuck to the rhythm guitar. Ulrich and Hetfield stated that they were also disappointed with the recordings, although Kirk Hammett revealed in the Metallica Rockumentary documentary that Jason's bass sound was reduced because James was still too grieved about Cliff's departure.

Besides playing the bass, Jason also fills backing vocals in several Metallica songs. Even during the tour Jason often share songs with James or even sing in full. When asked reader So What! on this subject, James replies that Jason often finishes the song he started to help him rest his vocal cords for a moment. Creeping Death and Seek & Destroy songs are often started by James and terminated by Jason. Even on several occasions Jason sang in full the majority of songs such as during a tour in Kentucky on July 8, 2000, when James could not perform due to injury.

Jason is known in his bass solo on a song he also wrote, My Friend of Misery. In addition he is also a co-writer in Blackened songs ( ... And Justice For All ), My Friend of Misery ( Metallica ), and Where the Wild Things Are ( Re-Load ).

Leave Metallica
During a meeting with members of Metallica in January 2001, Jason proposed the band to take a one-year break, where he would use to focus on his side project, Echobrain. According to Jason, the management of Metallica initially supported the project but the support was canceled a few days later and Jason chose to resign on January 10, 2001 as revealed in his interview on scuzzTV channel on the youtube site ( check here ) despite officially announcing his withdrawal on 17 January 2001 with expressed his reasoning as "personal reasons and physical damage I did to myself for many years I loved the music I loved." In an interview with Playboy , Jason revealed that he would release an album with Echobrain, as well as a tour. Hetfield opposes the idea by saying "When someone does a side project, it weakens Metallica." Then Jason parryed by showing James's contribution in the recording of another artist. James replied that his name was not on the record, and had no intention of selling it, which meant he was not bound to tour from the partnership.

Due to the absence of a bass player, record producer Bob Rock fills the bass sounds in the album St. Anger . Robert Trujillo just joined as a bassist on February 24, 2003. Despite having split up, Jason kept in good touch with Metallica. On April 4, 2009, Jason was present at the award of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th December 2011 Jason reunites in a 4-day show for the 30th anniversary of Metallica at Fillmore SF, and plays in some songs together with Metallica and sometimes plus other guest musicians.

Band after Metallica
After the less successful Echobrain project, Jason was actively involved in several bands such as Voivod in 2002. On Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest 2003 tour, Voivod became a companion band and Jason filled the band's bassist Ozzy, replacing Trujillo's Metallica, replacing him. Over at Voivod Jason is a major funder. Jason was involved in two albums before leaving the band. After from Voivod, Jason participated in the Rock Star Supernova band, a supergroup formed through the Rock Star TV reality show : Supernova 2006.

In October 2010 Jason announced to join singer Ian Gillan and former keyboardist Deep Purple Jon Lord, guitarist Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath, second guitarist Mikko Lindstrom from HIM and drummer Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden. The Superband was named WhoCares, recording a single for the charity 'Out of My Mind' which also featured the song 'Holy Water'. Launched in digital and CD format on May 6, 2011.

December 2012 Jason announced that he has formed his own band named Newsted with Jesus Mendez Jr. (drummer), guitarist Jessie Farnsworth, Mike Mushok (Staind guitarist who joined March 2013). The band has released an EP titled Metal which contains 4 songs on January 8, 2013. Newsted released their first album Heavy Metal Music on August 6, 2013.
