Childhood
Cliff is the son of Ray and Jan Burton, has 2 older sisters Scott and Connie. His interest in music happened when his father introduced classical music and he started piano lessons. When stepping on a teenager Cliff was interested in rock music, calcikes, and finally heavy metal. Start playing bass at the age of 13 years, after the death of his brother. Ray Burton mimicked Cliff's words: "I'll be the best bassist for my brother." He practiced up to 6 hours each day (also done after joining Metallica). The influence of music in addition to jazz and classics varies, from southern rock and country to blues. Cliff has revealed that Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), Misfits, Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy), and Geddy Lee (Rush) influenced his bass style.
Careers
While still schooling at Castro Valley High School, Burton formed his first band, EZ-Street. The name was taken from a topless bar in the Bay Area. Other members of the band are future guitarists of Faith No More Jim "Fatso" Martin, as well as drummer Mike Bordin who later also drummer Faith No More and the band Ozzy Osbourne.
Burton and Martin re-collaborate when they are one campus at Chabot College in Hayward, California. Their second band, Agents of Misfortune, followed the Hayward Area Recreation Department's Battle of Bands contest in 1981. Their auditions recorded video and showed their distinctive style of bass playing.
The video also shows a part that will appear on Metallica Kill 'Em All album, which is a typical bass solo on Pulling Teeth' (Anesthesia) song, as well as a chromatic intro to 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on Ride the Lightning album.
Moments after the Battle of Bands , Cliff joins his first big band, Trauma. Burton recorded the song 'Such A Shame' with them for a Massacre 2 Metal compilation album. 1982 Trauma to Los Angeles to play at Whiskey club A Go-Go. Among the audience there are James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich who are looking for a new bassist for Metallica. James reveals the voice that Cliff brings with his bass (part of Anesthesia ) as "amazing shredding". The two of them had time to rummage through the sounds of the sound of the guitar, but it turned out that on stage only a bassist was doing a solo. They immediately invited Cliff to join. At that time Cliff felt Trauma 'already started a little commercial' agreed, but again refused when he had to move to Los Angeles. Then Cliff said he would join if Metallica headquarters moved from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area. Due to Burton's intense desire to recruit, Metallica moments later moved the base from LA to El Cerrito, the Bay Area, the coastal city of San Francisco.
Cliff was involved in the process of making Megaforce demos, for the recording of Metallica Kill 'Em All's first album. They actually filed the title of this first album Metal Up Your Ass with a cover image: hands holding the knife out of the toilet hole, but rejected by the record distributor. Hearing that Cliff commented: "We should just kill 'em all, man." Apparently the sentence was liked by other band members and then made the title of the album. On this album Burton's bass solo entitled '(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth' is so famous for its melodic style and the use of the wah-wah pedal, which is not commonly used by bassist.
On their second album Ride the Lightning , Cliff also uses the pedal again in the intro 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and "lead bass" on 'The Call of Ktulu'. It is this album that makes big labels like Elektra Records glance and contracts with Metallica to work on the next album. According to Flemming Rasmussen, sound engineer of this second album, Cliff Burton is a unique person. Cliff is more of a 'stage person' so Flemming has to make Cliff comfortable when recording a second album by creating two special rooms, one containing Cliff alone and speakers in another, making Cliff feel on stage when the recording is done.
The third album, Master of Puppets , is an album known as a major milestone in the flow of heavy metal music and the sub-genre of thrash metal. Burton appears prominently in several songs, especially in 'Orion', which again shows Cliff's 'lead bass' style. While the song 'Master of Puppets' is a song recognized by Cliff as his favorite song. Cliff's last appearance took place in Stockholm, Sweden, on 26 September 1986 at Solnahallen Arena.
Dead
During the Damage Inc. tour in Europe supporting the Master of Puppets album, band members complained about the sleeping space on their less-than-satisfactory and unsatisfactory tour bus. They often do a lottery to choose the most comfortable and spacious bedroom. On 26 September 1986 they raffled by lifting the card, whose highest card was entitled to vote first. Cliff Burton gets the shovels, the highest cards, and chooses Kirk Hammett's bedroom, which then chooses to sleep in front, near the driver.
By 7:00 am on September 27, 1986, when all members of the band slept, the bus slipped off the road (the E4, 12 miles north of Ljungby) and fell aside, landing on the grass of Ljungby Municipality, near Dorarp in the southern countryside of Sweden. Burton was thrown out of the bus window which then fell on him and his life was not helped.
James once revealed that he believes the bus overturned because the driver was drunk. He also claimed to have gone down the street to look for 'black ice' (thin and transparent ice on the road often not seen by the driver) that might cause the bus to slip, but he did not find it. A local photographer, Lennart Wennberg (who came to the scene the next morning's accident) stated that if the cause of the accident was 'black ice' it was hard to accept because the temperature was over 0 degrees Celsius. But in the trial, the bus driver stated that he did not drink and enough rest so not sleepy while on duty. The bus driver is free without penalty. Kirk once told me that James looks angry at knowing Cliff died and almost hit the bus driver.
Cliff Burton's body was cremated and his ashes scattered in some of his favorite places in the Bay Area, one of which was Maxwell Ranch. At the release ceremony of October 7, 1986, the song 'Orion' was played to accompany Cliff's departure. The piece of Cliff's lyrics in the song 'To Live Is to Die' is " written in the Cliff monument in Ljungby, Sweden along with other posts 'thank you for your beautiful music'. The song 'To Live Is To Die' is a song Metallica creates as a tribute to Cliff Burton, and the bassline is taken from Cliff's unused clip recordings on previous albums. In this song the bass part is played by a new bassist, Jason Newsted. In addition Metallica held Orion Music + More Festival in 2011 and 2012 to commemorate Cliff.
In a thirty-minute anniversary show of Metallica at Fillmore S F, James Hetfield reminisced about Cliff as a unique person , very much in music. According to James, when Cliff's gig will dissolve in the song, he's always headb ang , and when his head is up, Cliff's eyes even just look the other half! But when James or Lars make a mistake in playing a song , Cliff will stop and look at his fellow colleague and his face expresses resentment as if it were the worst of the day (check out James remembered Cliff Burton's video).
Dave Mustaine, the Megadeth guitarist who while in Metallica was good friends with Cliff was devastated by his death and wrote the song 'In My Darkest Hour' as a tribute to Cliff. But the lyrics of the song are not related to Cliff's death. The band Anthrax also dedicate their album Among the Living , to Cliff. Likewise with Metal Church album, The Dark .
