Childhood
Dave is of French descent. At the age of 17, Dave was independent and rented his own apartment and earned money as a drug dealer. One of the customers, Willow, who works at a music store, often has no money so to exchange drugs he offers albums such as AC / DC, Motorhead, and Judas Priest. The groups that make up his taste in heavy metal. In 1970 Dave started playing piano and then electric guitar, especially BC Rich, then he joined the band Panic briefly as lead guitarist.
Metallica
In 1982 Dave left Panic to join Metallica after Lars Ulrich advertised in the local newspaper 'The Recycler' looking for lead guitarist. Dave remembers his first encounter with Lars and James: "I'm in the room warming up and coming out and asking, 'Well, I'll hear it right?' and they say 'No, you're welcome.' How easy it is, and I invite them to celebrate this by drinking beer. "
His career in Metallica was less than two years old. According to John Zazula, owner of Megaforce Records: "Dave is very talented, but also very troubled with alcohol and narcotics. If drunk he will become a madman, megalomania (always winning own / master) is ferocious. The other members of the band soon could not stand his behavior. Of course they're all drinking and drunk, but Dave is more, much more. "
Once one day, Dave took his pet while training, the dog jumped into Ron McGovney's truck and scratched the paint, then James kicked the dog. Then there was physical contact between Dave with James and Ron, and Lars's insult to Lars. It was Dave they fired, but the next day joined again after apologizing. This incident was one of the things Dave regretted most during his musical career (check his coverage here ). On another day, while training in Ron's basement house, Dave doused a can of beer on Ron's bass neck until his pickup , so Ron's bass was dead. At that time Ron drove 3 Metallica members from his home (source: interview Shock Waves with Ron McGovney see on Interview Ron McGovney 1997 ) .
Dave was released the second time (and last time) by Metallica on April 11, 1983 in New York, a few weeks before the recording of their first album. James is 'chosen' to say it because Lars does not want to, while Cliff is the latest member to replace Ron McGovney. They haul Dave's belongings, drive him to the Port Authority bus terminal, and buy a 4-day trip ticket home to Los Angeles. On this trip Dave wrote some lyrical ideas on a pamphlet, which later became the song 'Set the World Afire' from Megadeth So Far's So Good ... So What!
While in Metallica, Dave has several tours, writing songs for Kill 'Em All ,' The Four Horsemen, 'Jump in the Fire', 'Phantom Lord' and 'Metal Militia'. He is also written as a co-writer for the 2 songs released on Ride the Lightning's second album, 'Ride the Lightning' and 'The Call of Ktulu'. The Four Horsemen song was developed by James Hetfield from the song 'The Mechanix' created by three Dave, James, and Lars who first appeared in the No Life 'Til Leather demo. Some time later Dave also launched this song on Megadeth's first album with the original lyrics and was given the title 'Mechanix'. Mustaine also claimed to be writing the song 'Leper Messiah' on the Master of Puppets album, but until now this statement has not been addressed by Lars and James.
After dying from Metallica, Dave returned to live with his mother and worked as a telemarketer for Robbie McKinney's help. Dave Mustaine, McKinney, and Matt Kisselstein, working together as telemarketers. Dave then quit the job after having enough money to move into an apartment in Hollywood. Then Dave invites McKinney who plays the guitar, and Kisselstein to play bass and form the first band after Metallica: Fallen Angels. In his biography, Dave describes "We have no chemistry , no energy, no spark - or whatever the term - that keeps the band united." Cooperation did not last long.
Megadeth
One day Dave Ellefson, with Greg Handevidt, plays the bass opening of Van Halen's 'Running with the Devil' in an apartment under Mustaine's apartment. Dave felt noisy and stomped on the floor and shouted for them to stop. Then in a state of drunkenness, Mustaine grabbed a potted plant and threw it down about their apartment's air conditioner. Then they came out and knocked on Mustaine's door, asked for a cigarette. Dave replied: "There's a shop at the end of the road," then flung the door. A few minutes later they returned, and asked Dave to buy a beer, this time Dave accepted them inside. That night they talk about music, and soon Mustaine, Ellefson and Handevidt become friends ngeband.
Due to his lack of confidence in his vocals, Dave invites 'Lor' Kane (his real name Lawrence Renna) to swap positions. But Kane did not last long, despite being credited as the one who advocated renaming the band to Megadeth, knowing Dave wrote the song with the title. Then came the first drummer, Dijon Carruthers joined. The formations of Mustaine, Ellefson, Handevidt and Carruthers became the forerunners of Megadeth.
