Ron is of Northern Irish descent, has 2 sons, Justin and Tyler and 1 Jordann princess. Her children have an interest in music as their father.
Ron McGovney and James Hetfield are childhood friends, schoolmates in junior high, even roommates in high school. Ron had become a roadie or crew member James Hetfield, Phantom Lord. In 1981 James Hetfield formed Leather Charm band and invited Ron to play bass, alongside guitarist Hugh Tanner of the previous Hetfield band Phantom Lord. Ron had refused because he could not play bass, but then James taught him. "I did as requested by James, press in this section, the string strings that."
Then Hugh Tanner quit the band and pursue a career in music management. Next came guitarist Troy James and drummer Jim Mulligan. But Mulligan also soon retreated, making the band disband.
Hetfield formed Metallica in late 1981 with Lars Ulrich. James later took Ron along with Dave Mustaine joined in early 1982. They often used McGovney's family garage as a practice site and recorded demos like the Power Metal demos . The song 'Hit The Lights' recorded in Massacre Metal 1's second compilation album, featuring Ron McGovney playing bass.
Ron often argues with other partners especially Lars and Dave Mustaine. He feels his money is only used and only as a provider of transportation, not as a member of the band. He finally stepped down on December 10, 1982 as the tension escalated. His position was subsequently replaced by Cliff Burton. After leaving Metallica, Ron was traumatized by music and sold most of his equipment.
In late 1986 Ron was persuaded to appear again by vocalist Hirax, Katon W. De Pena, and both formed a Phantasm thrash metal band with guitarist Rodney Nicholson and several musicians, including Dark Angel drummer Gene Hoglan. Phantasm had a demo but never recorded an album. They disbanded in 1988 because of internal disputes. The 2001 thrash music label Deep Six Records released the Wreckage CD, a remastered version of the demo with the same title plus some live recordings of 1987.
After 1988, Ron was practically inactive for the next 23 years. On December 10, 2011, he played two songs with Metallica, Mustaine, and Lloyd Grant at The Fillmore, San Francisco as part of Metallica's 30th anniversary stand. Now Ron works as a machine operator in a factory and lives in the western part of North Carolina.
