Calif. - More than 18 months of negotiations ended on Friday when defense stars handled Aaron Donald signed a six-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams.
The deal is worth $ 135 million, including a $ 87 million guarantee, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
This is the richest defense agreement in NFL history and can make Donald with Rams through the 2024 season. "I feel good now," Donald said today after joining an hour-long training with the team. "Back here to play football again, that's what happened."
Rams general manager Les Snead said Donald arrived 35 minutes earlier to meet at Friday's morning training facility to complete the deal.
"He grew up," Snead said. "Nice to see it."
Donald's defense took place in all training camps, but he will play in the team's season opener on Monday night, September 10, against the Oakland Raiders.
Donald spent offseason training in Pittsburgh, where he starred in college, working with the strength and speed of his former instructor.
"I feel good," Donald said. "Still getting the football mod as far as it moves straight, and he just tries to rust little by little, he will come in a few days."
The Rams have six exercises scheduled before opening. Coach Sean McVay said, Donald would follow the same template for last season - when he entered the opening night and was activated on Sunday 2 - with some modifications.
"We have a strategic plan for the next few weeks to help him move quickly," McVay said. "Be smart where you get physical work, but you want to keep it fresh and ready to go on that date on Monday night."
The first choice in 2014, Donald entered the final year of a rookie contract and is scheduled to earn $ 6.9 million this season.
Donald, Pro-Bow's four-time Pro-All-Pro and Rocket Holder 2014 choices from three who survived three times, had 39 career sacks and nine were forced.
The contract resolution ensures that the Rams will open the season with their highly respected defense. They traded for Cornerbacks All-Pro Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters and signed the All-Pro midfielder Ndamukong Suh at a free agent.
"To see it on the training ground now, that's what we made," Snead said. "Now, you only hope to go and play games and see how jong-jong and come together."
Continuing Donald has worked in his appearance since 2017.
Negotiations began after the 2016 Rams' season 4-12, in which Donald, then third year pro, finished with eight sacks, five deflected blows and two forced punches.
Donald did not attend a voluntary offseason program but was reported to compulsory minicamps to avoid fines. He then left the training camp and was reported to team training practice on the opening night of the 2017 season, without a new contract. He is activated in Week 2.
Donald's absence through the training camp did not affect his play, when he continued to end his fourth season with 11 sacks and five players had to be in 14 games and was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year when the Rams won the NFC West and made their first playoff appearance since 2004.
Donald then continues the driver when Rams enters the offseason. He did not attend the team's organized activities and did not report to the mandatory minicamp.
When the Rams fear Donald could lose part of the season, Snead said the resolution of the contract began to form before the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens more than three weeks ago.
Donald expressed his frustration on Friday that the dispute was over.
"It was a difficult time for me," Donald said. "My family, they focus on me, and I keep working, keep doing things, must believe in the process.
"So, it's over and now, and I'm happy to be here, back with my man, back with the coach and playing soccer."
