Joined Metallica since April 1983, replacing Dave Mustaine. In 2003 ranked 11th in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of The 100 Greatest Guitarist of all Time. Year 2009 ranked 5th in Joel McIver's book 'The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists'.
Hammett is the son of Irish father and mother of the Philippines. Growing up in the town of East Bay at El Sobrante, he was interested in music from his brother's collection, Rick, especially Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and UFO music. All three make Kirk decided to play guitar at age 15. His first guitar is made by Montgomery Ward accompanied amps 'shoe box' with 4-inch speakers. During high school at De Anza High School in Richmond, California, he was friends with Les Claypool Primus band members.
After purchasing Fender Stratocaster guitar in 1978, Kirk tried to find his trademark voice by adding some parts of the guitar, and finally bought Gibson Flying V 1974. To buy this black Gibson Kirk willing to work in early high school as a dishwasher at Mira Vista Country Club, Richmond CA, for 8 months. Kirk also worked at Burger King, and came out after enough money to buy his first Marshall amp.
Career Music
In 1980, Kirk's interest led to the metal genre. Kirk with Paul Baloff (vocalist), Gary Holt (guitar), bassist Geoff Andrews, and drummer Tom Hunting founded the band Exodus. Kirk was involved in making Exodus's 1982 Demo . The band is one of the most influential bands in the Bay Area thrash movement . They had 2 times become the opening band Metallica show before he joined.
Kirk joined Metallica after receiving a call in April for an audition in New York. Kirk collects money, flies to NY and joins Metallica a month before they do a recording of Kill All Em's first album.
6 months before the recording of the Kill Em All album, and after the Kill 'Em All tour finished, Kirk took private guitar lessons with Joe Satriani. Interview with Guitar World magazine, Kirk claimed to do about 20-course with Joe Satriani in the span of 5 years since 1982. These courses open the gates to Kirk to the learning process of jazz, blues, and classical style. Hammett contributed in writing and riff making since the mid-1980s. One of them is a bridge for 'Creeping Death' which originally was Exodus's riff , Kirk's previous band. In addition the main riff song 'Enter Sandman' is his creation. This song became the most familiar song on the Metallica track list.
In 1993, after finishing his 'Black Album' tour he studied guitar at City College of San Francisco (on Kirk's wikipedia page majoring in Asian Film and Art at San Francisco State University), which he claimed made him the new guitarist of Load and Re- Load . In 2009 Hammett filled the preface in the British author's book, Joel McIver To Live Is To Die: The Life and Death of Metallica's Cliff Burton .
Another appearance
In 2005 Kirk played guitar in the song Carlos Santana Trinity with guitarist style 'steel pedal' Robert Randolph. The year 2006 filled the voice as her own character in the cartoon series The Simpsons ('the Mook, the Chef, the Wife and Her Homer'). It also filled the voice in the Adult Swim show Metalocalypse , including the voice of a two-fingered fan character ('The Curse of Dethklok'), The Queen of Denmark ('Happy Dethday'), and Finnish bar steward ('Dethtroll'). Together with James Hetfield, Kirk has appeared as a guest in the Space Ghost: Coast to Coast episode titled 'Jacksonville'. In 2010 Hammett played with Nicolas Abou Chedid in the solo album Nicolas.
Hammett played the guitar in the song 'Satan' with Orbital for the Spawn soundtrack : the Album which was released in 1997. Also played one song with My Morning Jacket and some songs with Superjam's annual collaboration, comprising Les Claypool and band members Gogol Bordello, Tom Waits songs.
Kirk is also involved in an EP titled Kichigai from the punk band Septic Death. He played lead guitar in a song titled the same. Became the guest guitarist K'Naan in the song 'If Rap Gets Jealous' from the album Troubadour . Together with other Metallica members also became the main character in the game Guitar Hero: Metallica . Kirk is seen in the background of the videoclip Primus 'John the Fisherman' is fishing on a boat owned by Les Claypool. Appeared as an actor and guitarist in the episode of John Benjamin Has A Van .

On October 1, 2012, Kirk Hammett launched his first book Too Much Horror Business , which contains photos of his passion for monster movies and horror memorabilia.
Personal life
Kirk Hammett has been married twice. His first wife, Rebecca, was only married for 3 years. Divorced in 1993 after cultivating a Metallica album. Since 1998 Kirk married his second wife, Lani, who gave him two sons: Angel (born September 29, 2006), and Vincenzo (born June 28, 2008). They live in his home in San Francisco, which is filled with film memorabilia, along with their two dogs Darla and Hoku, as well as some cats.
Technique
Hammett is seen always wrapped around his wrists with plaster to protect his skin because his hands are often torn and bleeding by his habit of pressing the strings with his hands to turn off the guitar sound (palm muting) and 'picking' fast. He is famous for his penchant for wah-wah pedals when solo. According to him: "Wah-wah is an extension of my personality."
