Manchester United have made 25 million euros (£ 22 million) for Atlético Madrid for 32-year-old defender Diego Godín to trigger his release clause but Uruguay prefers to stay at his club now.
Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign the center before the window was closed but was postponed by payments to Bayern Munich and Harry Maguire at Leicester City.

United's manager told a press conference on Thursday morning that it was unlikely the club would make a sign before the season began.
"I'm not sure," Mourinho said when asked if more players would arrive before the deadline. "I'm not sure and the market is closed today so it's time for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will close, so I have to focus on the players I have."
However, United are currently trying to secure an experienced center-back, who has won 122 caps for Uruguay and has been with Atlético since signing a contract from Villarreal in 2010.
The players are happy in Madrid and will be reluctant to move. United has offered it a € 9 million contract a year. With United triggering a release clause now it's up to the player to decide whether he wants a new challenge at United.

... we have little to ask. More people read the Guardian than before but advertising revenue in the media drops quickly. And unlike many news organizations, we don't put paywall - we want to keep our journalism open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. An independent investigative journal, the Guardian needs a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe in our perspective - because maybe that is your perspective.
The Guardian is an independent editorial, which means we set our own agenda. Our journalism is free from commercial incentives and is not influenced by owners, politicians or shareholders. No one edited our Editor. Nobody expresses our opinions. This is important because it allows us to vote in a silent voice, challenge the strong and make them responsible. That's what makes us different from many people in the media, in fact, honest reporting is very important.
If everyone who reads our report, who likes it, helps support it, our future will be safer. At least $ 1, you can support the Guardian - and only takes one minute. thank you
