New report highlights mental health, e-Smoking as the main concern for the young Utah

A new report from the Utah Department of Health Published Wednesday noted that youth mental health and exposure to e-cigarette is the main concern.
While the young Utah has seen some improvement in some area of health, the report showed mental health and exposure to e-Cigarette continues to be a concern.
"Unfortunately, what stood out in this report is that the measures that we use to keep track of youth mental health in every direction in the wrong direction," stated Michael Friedrichs, UDOH, epidemiology with a press release Wednesday . "But there are also positive signs in the report. For example, the number of teenagers who are exposed to smoking cigarettes and tanning devices, which can put them at risk of cancer later in life. "
UDOH, Utah Department Division of Human Services substance abuse and Mental Health and the Board of Education of the people the partners the state of Utah to carry out the school health and risk prevention survey every odd year public schools across Utah. The SHARP survey included prevention needs studies; and, through the approval of an active parent, students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 were asked about chronic diseases, lifestyle, mental health, drug abuse, and violence and injuries.
Findings-the main findings of the report 2013-2017 which may include:
• A significant increase can be seen among the teens report feeling sad or hopeless (up 20.8% to 27.3%) suicide adjust (14.1 18.1%) made a plan to commit suicide (of 10.8% to 14.3%), and one or more suicide attempts (6.2% to 7.7%) respectively.
• While Cigarette use decreased (3.9 percent to 2.9 percent), the percentage of teenagers who use the products vape or e-Cigarettes nearly doubled (from 5.8% to 11.1%) respectively.
• Far more youth with asthma have an asthma action plan (of 14.8% to 22.5%) respectively.
• Youth report significantly less uses tanning (7,7% up 4.0%) respectively.
• There is a slight increase in the percentage of adolescents who wear seat belts (93.8% to 95.5%) respectively.
• Stout drink, use marijuana and use of prescription drugs among adolescents changed from 2013 to 2017.
"This survey is an important tool that helps school administrators, teachers and practitioners of public health to identify the health needs and safety of the students of Utah and take steps to protect and improve the health of teens, "said Friedrichs.
Without this data, we will not be able to identify trends in risky behavior or to evaluate the success of programs that enhance protective factors.
